A Form Four candidate is currently recovering at Tenwek Hospital in Bomet County following a severe physical assault by a female schoolmate over an alleged romantic dispute involving a male peer in Kuresoi. The heated confrontation quickly escalated into violence, leaving the candidate with serious injuries that require ongoing medical monitoring during a critical period of her academic preparation for national examinations. Police officers subsequently arrested the suspect, identified as Chepkemoi, who remains held in custody at Kiptagich Police Station as detectives gather witness statements and compile medical evidence to support formal legal charges. The incident reportedly involved two 17-year-old female students from Arorwet Comprehensive School. The victim, identified in media reports as Tracy Chepng’etich, was allegedly attacked by her schoolmate, Mercy Chepkemoi.

Arorwet Location Chief Rose Bii said the victim was reportedly waylaid along a road near her home, where the suspect was allegedly waiting for her. The report states that the victim was slashed on the neck with a panga, sustaining deep injuries that required urgent medical attention.

The circumstances surrounding the incident have drawn attention because the two students are said to have been schoolmates. Rather than a disagreement occurring within the school compound, the reported attack took place along a road near the victim's home, raising concerns about the safety of learners even when they are outside school.

The allegations remain subject to police investigation, and the precise sequence of events leading to the confrontation must be established by investigators.

Where students have disagreements, adults should encourage them to seek assistance rather than confront one another physically. Threats, stalking, intimidation or indications that a disagreement could become violent should be taken seriously and reported to responsible adults or the relevant authorities.

Schools can also strengthen guidance and counselling programmes to help learners develop emotional regulation, conflict-resolution skills and healthy ways of responding to rejection or jealousy.

The severity of the reported injuries has heightened concern among residents and members of the school community. Injuries to the neck can require urgent medical assessment because the area contains important blood vessels, nerves and structures involved in breathing and swallowing.

However, no detailed medical update on the student's current condition was provided in the report. It would therefore be inappropriate to speculate about her prognosis, the procedures undertaken by doctors or how long she may remain in hospital.

For the victim and her family, the immediate priority is medical care and recovery. Serious injuries can also bring emotional distress, uncertainty and financial pressure, making support from relatives, trusted adults and the wider community important during the recovery process.

Tenwek Hospital, located in Bomet County, is a Level 5 teaching and referral facility that provides emergency and specialised medical services. Its location makes it an important healthcare institution for patients from Bomet and neighbouring counties.

Schools can also strengthen guidance and counselling programmes to help learners develop emotional regulation, conflict-resolution skills and healthy ways of responding to rejection or jealousy.

Teachers and school counsellors can reinforce these efforts by providing guidance on respectful relationships and the consequences of violence. Students should understand that no romantic disagreement gives anyone the right to harm another person.

Schools can also establish clear procedures for reporting threats and interpersonal conflicts. Early intervention may help prevent a disagreement from escalating into a dangerous confrontation.

At the same time, young people should be encouraged to concentrate on their education and seek guidance when emotional challenges begin affecting their wellbeing, friendships or academic progress.

These measures are particularly important for learners approaching their final years of secondary education, when academic pressure and uncertainty about the future can add to existing personal challenges.

Residents may be concerned about whether young people can safely resolve disputes without resorting to violence. The case also demonstrates the importance of ensuring that allegations are investigated carefully and that the victim receives appropriate support. This event created fear among the residents of Kuresoi .The violent attack by panga along a public road causes heightened fear among villagers and parents , prompting concerns over safety for students commuting to school.

Severe violence among local students creates distress ,grief and  emotional shock among neighbours, classmates and family members.

Community leaders can help by encouraging peaceful dispute resolution and discouraging retaliation. Taking the law into one's own hands could create further harm and interfere with the investigation.

The victim's privacy should also be respected during this difficult period. Members of the public should avoid circulating graphic images, unverified claims or personal information that could expose either student to harassment.

It is equally important to avoid presenting the alleged love triangle as a justification for the violence. Whatever the underlying disagreement, the circumstances must be established through a proper investigation.
