The Linda Mwananchi political movement has settled on Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as its preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election, placing the lawmaker at the centre of the movement’s plans to participate in the next presidential contest.

The decision has been announced by leaders associated with Linda Mwananchi as the movement continues to organise itself ahead of the 2027 elections. Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, who serves as the movement’s spokesperson, said the group intends to nominate Sifuna as its presidential flagbearer before engaging other opposition formations on possible cooperation.

The announcement marks a significant development in Sifuna’s political journey, following months of nationwide mobilisation under the Linda Mwananchi banner.

According to Omondi, the movement intends to establish its own political platform and subsequently engage other opposition parties and leaders over the possibility of working together in the 2027 presidential contest.

Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi has also said that Linda Mwananchi had settled on Sifuna as its preferred presidential candidate. Osotsi said the movement’s supporters had repeatedly expressed support for Sifuna during its mobilisation activities across different parts of the country.

The move follows earlier indications from Sifuna that Linda Mwananchi was considering fielding its own presidential candidate.

In July, Sifuna said the movement was consulting supporters across the country before making a final decision. Speaking on Citizen TV, he said Linda Mwananchi was seriously considering presenting a presidential candidate but maintained that the decision would be collective rather than one made by an individual.

At the time, Sifuna said the movement had already visited several counties and intended to continue its nationwide engagement before settling on its political strategy.

He also said that he would not reject the responsibility of running for President if Kenyans collectively decided that he should take up the challenge. However, he emphasised that the decision had to be made together with supporters.

The latest endorsements from Linda Mwananchi leaders therefore represent a progression from those earlier consultations.

The Daily Nation reported in August that Sifuna’s allies were pursuing the registration of the name Linda Mwananchi as a political party, while also considering alternative names in case of legal or political complications.
