The Linda Mwananchi movement held a major political rally at Jacaranda Grounds in Nairobi on Sunday, September 13, 2026, bringing together opposition politicians, political aspirants, activists and a large number of supporters. The rally was the culmination of a day-long mobilisation exercise that began with a church service and later moved through several busy parts of Nairobi before ending at Jacaranda Grounds in Embakasi East.

Jacaranda Grounds was the main venue for the gathering. It is important to clarify that the political event was held at Jacaranda Grounds in Embakasi East, rather than Jacaranda Gardens apartments on Kamiti Road in Githurai. 

The event attracted considerable attention because it brought together several prominent political figures associated with the emerging Linda Mwananchi movement, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Siaya Governor James Orengo, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and other political leaders. The gathering was also significant because it came at a time when political parties and movements are already positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election. 

The Nairobi tour began with prayers

The Linda Mwananchi activities in Nairobi did not begin at Jacaranda Grounds. The programme started earlier in the day at All Saints Cathedral, where Edwin Sifuna and other leaders attended a church service before beginning their political tour.

Large numbers of supporters gathered at the cathedral, with security officers also deployed in the area. The church service provided a religious beginning to what would later become a highly political day of mobilisation. 

After the service, the leaders and their supporters began moving through various parts of Nairobi. The strategy was clearly designed to take the movement directly to residents rather than limiting the political engagement to the final rally.

The tour included stops around Marikiti Market, Gikomba Market and Burma Market, followed by movement through parts of Eastlands and eventually towards Jacaranda Grounds. The Standard reported that the Nairobi tour involved Sifuna, Babu Owino, Orengo, Natembeya and other leaders. 

Movement through Nairobi streets

The procession attracted crowds as it moved through the city. Supporters chanted slogans, waved placards and followed the political leaders as they travelled towards the rally venue.

One of the major routes used by the procession was Jogoo Road, before the convoy proceeded towards Buruburu and eventually Jacaranda Grounds.

The movement through busy neighbourhoods was politically significant because it allowed the leaders to interact directly with ordinary residents, traders and young people. It also gave the movement considerable visibility in Nairobi.

Reports indicated that traders and residents along some parts of the route stopped to watch the procession. The Kenya Times reported that some traders along Jogoo Road paused their activities as the political procession passed. 

 *Police presence and tension* 

Security was one of the major issues surrounding Sunday's activities.

Police officers were deployed in different parts of Nairobi as the Linda Mwananchi procession moved through the city. The security presence was particularly noticeable around the CBD and the route taken by the political leaders.

According to The Kenya Times' live coverage, police fired teargas at Marikiti Market during the morning as tensions rose. Supporters were subsequently urged to remain calm. 

The security situation had been a concern even before the rally. Babu Owino had previously raised allegations that individuals might attempt to disrupt the event, while police authorities had also warned against activities that could interfere with businesses and public order.

These developments meant that the Jacaranda rally was being held under heightened security conditions.

It is important to distinguish between verified incidents and political allegations. Claims about individuals planning to disrupt the gathering were made by political actors before the rally, but allegations themselves should not automatically be treated as established facts.

Jacaranda Grounds fills with supporters

By the afternoon, large crowds had gathered at Jacaranda Grounds waiting for the Linda Mwananchi leaders.

The large attendance was an important moment for the movement because one of the purposes of the Nairobi tour was to demonstrate its ability to mobilise supporters in the capital.

 *Edwin Sifuna's message* 

Edwin Sifuna was one of the central speakers at the Jacaranda rally.

The Nairobi senator used the platform to strongly criticise President William Ruto's administration and to present Linda Mwananchi as an alternative political force.

Sifuna also directly attacked government policies, including the Affordable Housing programme. He argued that the challenges facing residents of Nairobi's informal settlements were not simply housing problems but were closely connected to income and economic opportunities. Sifuna also declared that President Ruto would be a one-term president, a statement that demonstrated the increasingly confrontational political environment ahead of the 2027 election. 

The statements showed that Linda Mwananchi is positioning itself as an opposition movement rather than simply a civic organisation.

 *James Orengo attacks the Ruto administration* 

Siaya Governor James Orengo was another prominent speaker at the rally.

Orengo criticised President Ruto's leadership and argued that the country had not been managed according to its full potential. Citizen Digital reported that Orengo said Ruto had failed to run the country effectively and argued against giving him another term in office. 

Orengo's participation was particularly significant because he is one of the country's experienced opposition politicians. His presence alongside younger politicians such as Sifuna and Babu Owino demonstrated the broad political backgrounds represented within the Linda Mwananchi mobilisation.

The rally therefore brought together politicians from different generations and regions who share opposition to the current administration.

Babu Owino's role

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino was another key figure during the Nairobi event.

His involvement was particularly important because Jacaranda Grounds is located within his political backyard. Before the rally, Babu had conducted meetings with Linda Mwananchi aspirants from Nairobi County to prepare for the event.

Babu Owino questioned why Nairobi continued to experience youth unemployment, insecurity and inadequate drainage despite the city being the country's economic centre. 

The focus on young people is politically important because Kenya has a large youthful population. Young voters are expected to play an important role in the 2027 election.

Unemployment, lack of business opportunities, high living costs and limited access to affordable financing remain issues that political movements can use to mobilise young voters.

Linda Mwananchi's messaging has therefore sought to portray itself as a movement fighting for ordinary citizens, particularly people who feel excluded from economic opportunities.

A young girl becomes a highlight of the rally

One of the memorable moments at the Jacaranda gathering involved a six-year-old girl known as Sky, who reportedly captured the attention of the crowd after presenting a poem.

K24 reported that the young girl, who lives with a rare condition, stole the spotlight during the rally with her moving performance. 

Her appearance added a different dimension to an otherwise highly political event. It demonstrated how large public gatherings can also provide opportunities for social messages and personal stories to reach large audiences.

The political significance of Jacaranda

Jacaranda Grounds has become an important venue for political mobilisation in Nairobi.

The decision by Linda Mwananchi leaders to hold their main rally there was therefore strategic. The venue is located in Eastlands, an area with a large population and significant political importance.

Babu Owino's Embakasi East constituency also gives the venue additional political significance.

The large crowd at Jacaranda was presented by the movement's supporters as evidence of growing popularity. However, the size of a political rally should not automatically be interpreted as a prediction of election results.
