A passenger has died aboard a Kenya Airways flight travelling from Nairobi, Kenya, to Lagos, Nigeria, after suffering a medical emergency shortly before the aircraft landed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The incident occurred on Tuesday night, October 6, 2026, turning what had been a routine international journey into a tragic event for passengers and crew members on board.

According to Kenya Airways, the passenger became unresponsive at approximately 9:20 p.m. Nigerian time, about 20 minutes before the aircraft was expected to land in Lagos. The airline said its cabin crew responded to the emergency by administering first aid and following the appropriate procedures as required when a passenger becomes seriously ill during a flight.

The aircraft eventually landed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos at about 9:41 p.m. Medical personnel were waiting for the aircraft and attended to the passenger after the plane arrived. However, following further examination, the medical team confirmed that the passenger had died.

Kenya Airways confirms passenger's death

Kenya Airways confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday, October 7. The airline described the situation as a medical emergency that occurred during its Nairobi-Lagos flight.

The airline said the passenger was found unresponsive approximately 20 minutes before landing. According to the carrier, the crew immediately provided first aid and followed emergency procedures while the aircraft continued towards Lagos.

After landing, medical personnel boarded the aircraft and examined the passenger. They subsequently confirmed that he had passed away.

Kenya Airways expressed condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and said it was supporting those affected by the incident.

The airline also said it was coordinating with the deceased passenger's family, local authorities and aviation regulators as the necessary procedures following the death are undertaken.

Passenger's identity not released

Kenya Airways has not publicly disclosed the identity, nationality or age of the passenger. The airline has also not announced the suspected medical cause of death.

The decision not to immediately release the passenger's identity is consistent with the airline's statement that it would respect the privacy and dignity of the deceased and those affected by the incident.

At this stage, it would therefore be premature to speculate about what medical condition caused the passenger's death. The available information confirms that the passenger became unresponsive during the flight, received assistance from the crew and was later pronounced dead after the aircraft landed.

Reports of an earlier disturbance

While Kenya Airways has officially described the incident as a medical emergency, reports from Nigerian authorities and local media have provided additional details about what allegedly happened before the passenger became unresponsive.

Nigeria's aviation authorities said police had taken over investigations into the circumstances surrounding the passenger's death. Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, said the agency had been briefed about the incident by Kenya Airways' country manager.

According to reports attributed to Achimugu, the passenger had reportedly been picked up from Madagascar after customs authorities allegedly denied him entry. Kenya Airways was reportedly responsible for returning him because the airline had transported him into the country.

The Nigerian official further alleged that the passenger became restless and aggressive during the flight. Reports say he allegedly attempted to gain access to the cockpit and later tried to open the rear aircraft door.

The reports indicate that the passenger was restrained to prevent further disruption and to protect other passengers and crew members. He later became unresponsive, prompting the crew to provide medical assistance.

However, these additional accounts remain part of the circumstances being investigated. The official Kenya Airways statement does not publicly describe the passenger as aggressive or provide details about any restraint. The airline's confirmed position is that the passenger experienced a medical emergency, became unresponsive and was later confirmed dead by medical personnel in Lagos.

Police investigation underway

The involvement of Nigerian police means that authorities are expected to establish what happened during the final part of the flight and determine the circumstances surrounding the passenger's death.

Investigators may examine events leading up to the medical emergency, statements from passengers and crew, available aircraft records and medical findings.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged disturbance are particularly significant because they could help authorities understand whether the passenger's condition was connected to the events reported during the flight.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has indicated that it will allow the police investigation to proceed. The precise cause of death has not yet been officially announced.

Crew responded before landing

One important aspect of the incident is the response by the Kenya Airways cabin crew.

According to the airline, crew members administered first aid after the passenger became unresponsive. They also followed established emergency procedures while the aircraft continued towards Lagos.

This is an important part of airline safety because cabin crew members are trained to respond to medical emergencies, including situations where a passenger suddenly becomes unconscious or critically ill.

The decision to have medical personnel waiting at the airport also meant that the passenger could be assessed immediately after landing. Despite these measures, the medical personnel determined that the passenger had already died.

Tragic end to international journey

The death has highlighted the challenges airlines face when passengers suffer serious medical problems while thousands of feet above the ground.

Unlike an emergency occurring in a hospital or on the ground, an aircraft has limited medical resources. Cabin crew can provide first aid and use available emergency equipment, but they cannot offer the same level of medical treatment available in a hospital.

Airlines therefore have procedures for dealing with serious medical emergencies, including communicating with ground teams, preparing medical personnel to meet the aircraft and, where necessary, diverting flights to another airport.

In this case, the aircraft continued to Lagos because the emergency occurred close to the scheduled destination. The plane landed approximately 21 minutes after the reported 9:20 p.m. medical emergency, according to the times released by Kenya Airways.

Kenya Airways offers condolences

Kenya Airways has expressed sympathy to the passenger's relatives and friends following the tragedy.

The airline said it was providing the necessary support while working with the family, local authorities and aviation regulators.

The carrier also emphasised its commitment to protecting the privacy and dignity of everyone involved.

The death is expected to leave passengers who witnessed the incident deeply affected, particularly given that it happened shortly before the aircraft reached Lagos.

For the passenger's family, attention will now turn to receiving official information about what happened and arrangements following the death.

Investigations expected to provide more answers

As investigations continue, several questions remain unanswered, including the exact cause of death and the full sequence of events aboard the aircraft.

The official account from Kenya Airways establishes that a passenger became unresponsive approximately 20 minutes before landing, that the crew provided first aid and that medical personnel confirmed the death after the aircraft arrived in Lagos.

Additional reports from Nigerian authorities have raised questions about the passenger's behaviour before the medical emergency, including allegations that he became restless, attempted to access restricted parts of the aircraft and was restrained.

Those allegations should be treated as reports under investigation until authorities establish the facts.

For now, Kenya Airways has confirmed the death and is cooperating with the relevant authorities. The airline has also pledged support to the deceased passenger's family as the investigation and necessary procedures continue.

The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of medical emergencies during air travel and the importance of trained cabin crews, emergency procedures and coordination between airlines, airports, medical teams and security authorities. The circumstances surrounding this particular death are expected to become clearer once the Nigerian investigation is completed and further official information is released.
