President William Samoei Ruto is in Kericho County as part of his four-day development tour of the South Rift region, a visit that has attracted considerable attention from county leaders, residents, farmers, traders, students and other stakeholders. The tour, which runs from September 9 to September 12, 2026, is focused largely on development projects, infrastructure, education, healthcare, affordable housing and economic empowerment. 

The President’s arrival in Kericho comes at a time when the county is keen to position itself as one of the major beneficiaries of the national government’s development agenda. Governor Dr Eric Mutai and other leaders have been at the centre of preparations and engagements surrounding the presidential visit, with the county expected to showcase ongoing projects while also presenting residents’ priorities to the Head of State.

The visit is particularly significant because Kericho occupies an important position in Kenya’s agricultural economy. It is internationally recognised for tea production, while its communities are also involved in dairy farming, maize production, horticulture and other agricultural activities. Consequently, investments in roads, markets, education, sports and other infrastructure have the potential to directly influence the livelihoods of thousands of households.

Governor Dr Eric Mutai has previously expressed appreciation for the national government’s development projects in Kericho and has described several ongoing investments as important to the county’s future. In July, the governor highlighted national government initiatives in infrastructure, water, sports, education and agriculture, saying they were contributing to the transformation of the county. 

His role during the President’s visit is therefore important because the tour provides an opportunity for the county administration and the national government to demonstrate areas where their development priorities intersect.

Governor Mutai and other local leaders have been expected to welcome President Ruto and accompany him to various project sites. The reception also provides an opportunity for residents to communicate directly with national leaders about the issues affecting their communities.

The President’s visit comes after a period in which Kericho has received attention because of major national government investments. These include affordable housing, road infrastructure, markets, sports facilities and education-related projects.

Major Projects on the Presidential Programme

One of the major attractions of the visit is the range of development projects that President Ruto is expected to launch, inspect or commission.

Reports on the President’s programme indicate that his Kericho engagements include the launch of an affordable housing project, visits to education facilities, activities around modern markets and inspection of major road infrastructure. A programme reported by Aasai TV identifies the Chelimo Affordable Housing project, a new tuition block and storey building at Kipsigis Girls’ High School, the Chepseon Modern Market and inspection of the Kericho–Eldoret Highway among the key activities. 

The projects demonstrate the broad nature of the visit. Rather than concentrating on a single sector, the President is expected to interact with different parts of the county’s economy and social infrastructure.

Affordable Housing

Affordable housing is expected to feature prominently during the Kericho visit. The programme includes the launch of the Chelimo Affordable Housing project, adding to the national government’s housing programme in the county.

Affordable housing is one of the flagship programmes of President Ruto’s administration. The government argues that the programme is intended not only to provide decent homes but also to generate employment for young people and create business opportunities for construction workers, suppliers, artisans and other small enterprises.

Kericho has already experienced national government investment in affordable housing. In March 2024, President Ruto launched the Talai Affordable Housing Project in Kericho and also commissioned Kericho Town link roads. 

The latest project therefore represents a continuation of the government’s housing agenda in the county.

For residents, affordable housing can have benefits beyond accommodation. Construction creates demand for local labour and materials, while completed housing developments can stimulate surrounding businesses and improve urban planning.

Education is another major area expected to feature during the President’s Kericho tour.

The President is expected to visit Kipsigis Girls’ High School, where a new tuition block and storey building are among the facilities being highlighted during the tour. 

Investment in school infrastructure is particularly important because Kericho has a large population of young people. Improved classrooms, laboratories, libraries, dormitories and other facilities can help schools accommodate growing enrolment and provide a better learning environment.

The presence of the President at such a facility also underscores the national government’s emphasis on education and human capital development.

For parents and students, development of school infrastructure can reduce pressure on existing facilities. For teachers, improved facilities can make it easier to conduct lessons and practical activities.

Roads and Transport Infrastructure

Road development is another central component of President Ruto’s visit to the county.

The President is expected to inspect sections of the Kericho–Eldoret Highway, while other road projects are also part of the broader development agenda for the region. 

Road infrastructure is extremely important to Kericho because the county’s economy depends heavily on agriculture. Tea, dairy products, vegetables and other farm produce must be transported from farms to factories, markets and consumers.

Poor roads can increase transportation costs and reduce farmers’ earnings. Better roads, on the other hand, can shorten travel times, reduce vehicle operating costs and improve access to markets.

The national government has also identified major road corridors connecting the South Rift and western parts of Kenya as important components of its wider infrastructure programme. President Ruto has previously highlighted the importance of the Mau Summit–Kericho–Kisumu corridor and the wider road network linking the region to other parts of the country. 

Modern Markets and Support for Traders

Modern markets are also expected to feature prominently during the visit.

The Chepseon Modern Market is among the projects associated with the President’s development programme in the county. President Ruto had previously launched the Chesinendet Fresh Produce Market in Chepseon, a facility designed to provide a safer and more organised trading environment for thousands of traders. 

Market infrastructure is important for small-scale traders and farmers because it provides a central location where agricultural products can be sold.

For Kericho, this is especially significant because many households depend on agriculture. A modern market can provide better sanitation, storage and trading conditions while creating an organised environment for buyers and sellers.

The development of markets also supports the government’s broader effort to improve agricultural value chains. Instead of farmers selling their produce under difficult conditions, improved market infrastructure can make it easier for them to access consumers and traders.

Sports Development

Sports infrastructure is another area that has received attention in Kericho.

Kiprugut Chumo Stadium, formerly known as Kericho Green Stadium, is one of the major sports facilities associated with development in the county. President Ruto renamed the stadium in honour of Wilson Kiprugut Chumo, Kenya’s first Olympic medalist. Kiprugut won bronze in the 800 metres at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, giving Kenya its first Olympic medal.

Agriculture and the Tea Economy

President Ruto’s visit also carries considerable significance for agriculture.

Kericho remains one of Kenya’s most important tea-growing regions, and the economic wellbeing of many households is connected to agricultural production.

The national government has increasingly focused on agricultural value addition. President Ruto has argued that Kenya should move away from exporting raw agricultural products and instead increase processing and value addition locally.

In a previous address, the President said the government was working with the private sector to establish common-user facilities in Kericho and other locations, with the aim of increasing the proportion of value-added tea exports. 

This is an important issue for Kericho because processing more agricultural products locally could create employment, increase farmers’ incomes and strengthen the county’s industrial base.

The President has also recently emphasised measures to cushion farmers from the effects of poor rainfall, including reducing the cost of fertiliser and seeds. 

 *Residents’ Expectations* 

The presidential visit has generated considerable expectations among Kericho residents.

Residents generally want development projects to translate into tangible improvements in their daily lives. Among the key expectations are better roads, improved healthcare, employment opportunities, education infrastructure, agricultural support and improved markets.

Young people are particularly interested in employment and opportunities created by government projects.

Farmers, meanwhile, are keen on issues such as better roads, affordable agricultural inputs, reliable markets and improved value chains.

Traders want modern markets and better business infrastructure, while residents in urban centres are interested in affordable housing and improved public services.

The President’s visit therefore provides an important platform for residents to interact with national leaders and communicate these concerns.

Political and Leadership Significance

The visit also has political significance, although its official focus is development.

The President is visiting the region ahead of the 2027 General Election, and his development tours have attracted considerable political attention. Local leaders from different political backgrounds have been engaging with the President’s development agenda.

In Kericho, Governor Eric Mutai and other leaders are expected to use the visit to highlight projects that they believe are benefiting residents.

At the same time, residents have demonstrated that they expect leaders to address local concerns. Recent reporting has shown that some residents in parts of Kericho have raised questions about which projects are included in the presidential programme, demonstrating the importance of ensuring that development priorities reflect local needs.
