Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy “Lulu” Muteke, have died in a helicopter crash in Marondera Rural, Mashonaland East Province. The crash occurred on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, as the aircraft was travelling in the area east of Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare. Authorities said there were no survivors among those aboard the helicopter.

The death of Chivayo, a highly prominent and controversial figure in Zimbabwe’s business and political circles, has attracted widespread attention across the region. His family confirmed that he and his wife were among those killed, while Zimbabwean authorities launched efforts to establish the identities of all the victims and determine what caused the aircraft to crash.

How the helicopter crash happened

According to reports from Zimbabwean authorities, the helicopter crashed in the Marondera Rural area at around 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Police confirmed that six people were aboard the aircraft. Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana subsequently said that there were no survivors.

The aircraft reportedly crashed at a farm near Waddilove Mission. Emergency responders were sent to the scene as authorities began dealing with the aftermath and investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said authorities initially faced difficulties identifying the victims because of the severity of the crash. The aircraft caught fire after the accident, prompting authorities to undertake identification procedures before formally releasing the names of all those who died.

Chivayo's family later confirmed his death together with that of his wife, Lucy Muteke. Family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo expressed the family's devastation following the tragedy.

Reports differ slightly on some details surrounding the number and composition of people aboard the helicopter. Zimbabwean police and government officials have consistently reported six occupants, including two pilots, while some early accounts contained different descriptions. The confirmed point from authorities is that the helicopter crashed and there were no survivors.

Who was Wicknell Chivayo?

Wicknell Chivayo was one of Zimbabwe's most recognisable businessmen. He became particularly famous for his lavish lifestyle, expensive cars, private aviation and highly publicised financial gifts to people and organisations.

He was also known for his strong connections with senior political figures in Zimbabwe and elsewhere in Africa. His social-media accounts frequently featured photographs of him with prominent political leaders and other influential personalities.

Chivayo's public profile went beyond conventional business activities. He became a major social-media personality, where he regularly showcased luxury vehicles, expensive properties, private aircraft and large financial donations.

He was reported to have given vehicles and money to musicians, religious leaders, sports personalities and other public figures. His generosity made him popular among some of his followers, while his wealth and political connections also generated considerable public debate in Zimbabwe.

His business activities and controversies

Chivayo's rise to prominence was accompanied by controversy surrounding some of his business dealings.

One of the major areas that attracted attention was government contracting. Reports have linked him to lucrative contracts involving public institutions, including a major contract related to election materials ahead of Zimbabwe's 2023 general elections. His business activities subsequently became the subject of public scrutiny and political debate. Now

Chivayo denied wrongdoing when allegations were made against him. His supporters and associates pointed to his business activities and philanthropy, while critics questioned the sources of his wealth and his proximity to political power.

The businessman therefore occupied an unusual position in Zimbabwean public life. He was simultaneously celebrated by some for his generosity and entrepreneurial success while being scrutinised by others because of his political relationships and business dealings.

It is important to distinguish allegations and political criticism from established findings. Reports about controversies surrounding Chivayo have included accusations concerning procurement and political influence, but Chivayo denied wrongdoing.

Relationship with President Emmerson Mnangagwa

Chivayo was widely known for his close relationship with Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa and members of the country's ruling political establishment.

His photographs with senior political figures became a regular feature of his social-media presence. His relationship with Zimbabwe's political leadership was one reason his activities attracted considerable public interest.

His connections were not limited to Zimbabwe. Chivayo also appeared in photographs and public engagements with several African leaders, including Kenyan President William Ruto and other prominent figures across the continent.

Following news of the crash, President William Ruto publicly mourned Chivayo and his wife. Ruto described Chivayo as his friend and expressed condolences to the families of those who died.

Ruto's message highlighted the extent to which Chivayo had developed relationships beyond Zimbabwe and become a familiar figure in regional African circles.

His lavish lifestyle

Perhaps one of the most recognisable aspects of Chivayo's public image was his extravagant lifestyle.

He frequently posted images and videos involving luxury vehicles, private aircraft, expensive jewellery and high-value gifts. His social-media activities attracted a large following and helped transform him from a businessman into a celebrity-like figure.

He became particularly famous for giving expensive vehicles to musicians and other personalities. Some of his donations involved luxury cars, while others consisted of substantial amounts of money.

A Mail & Guardian profile published before his death described his growing prominence through his combination of wealth, philanthropy, political connections and public displays of luxury.

His lifestyle also attracted questions about the source of his wealth. Zimbabwe's anti-corruption authorities had previously taken an interest in his wealth and some of his high-value purchases. Chivayo rejected accusations of criminal wrongdoing.

His wife Lucy Muteke

Lucy “Lulu” Muteke was Chivayo's wife and was also well known through her association with the businessman.

The couple married in a high-profile ceremony in 2025, according to Zimbabwean media reports. Their relationship subsequently featured in Chivayo's public social-media presence.

Her death alongside her husband has therefore made the crash a particularly devastating tragedy for their families and friends.

The circumstances of their final journey remain part of the investigation. Authorities have not yet established the cause of the crash publicly, and investigators are expected to examine the aircraft, flight circumstances, weather conditions and other relevant factors.

Investigation into the crash

As of October 1, 2026, authorities had not announced a definitive cause of the helicopter crash.

Police and emergency personnel attended the scene, while investigations began into what caused the aircraft to go down. Because the crash involved a fire and fatalities, authorities also had the difficult task of identifying the victims and notifying their relatives.

The investigation is expected to establish whether the accident resulted from a mechanical problem, weather conditions, human factors or another cause. At this stage, it would be premature to attribute responsibility to any particular factor before investigators release their findings.

Reactions after his death

News of Chivayo's death has generated reactions in Zimbabwe and across Africa. His connections with political leaders, business personalities, entertainers and religious figures meant that his death immediately attracted widespread attention.

President Ruto's public condolence message was among the reactions reported in Kenya. Ruto mourned Chivayo and Lucy Muteke and extended condolences to their families and to the people of Zimbabwe.

In Zimbabwe, the tragedy has also generated considerable discussion because Chivayo was such a visible figure. His supporters have remembered his generosity and public donations, while coverage has also revisited the controversies and questions that surrounded his business career.

A sudden end to a highly public life

Chivayo's death marks the sudden end of the life of a businessman who had become one of Zimbabwe's most recognisable wealthy personalities.

At just over 40 years old, he had built an unusually high public profile through business, philanthropy, political relationships and social media. His displays of wealth made him a major online personality, while his business dealings placed him at the centre of public debates about money, government contracts and political influence in Zimbabwe.

The helicopter crash has now brought that highly visible chapter of his life to an abrupt end.

For his family, however, the focus is no longer on his business success or public profile but on the loss of a husband, relative and friend. Lucy Muteke also lost her life in the same tragedy, along with the other people aboard the aircraft.

As investigations continue, authorities are expected to provide further information about the identities of all the victims and the circumstances that caused the helicopter to crash. Until investigators publish their findings, the exact cause of the accident remains unknown.

The deaths of Wicknell Chivayo and Lucy Muteke have therefore become one of Zimbabwe's most closely followed tragedies, bringing together questions about aviation safety, the investigation process and the legacy of a businessman whose extraordinary public life had made him known far beyond Zimbabwe's borders.
