Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati had been battling a recurrent cancerous brain tumor, his family has revealed. After his initial diagnosis, he underwent surgery in Germany to remove the tumor.
In April 2024, doctors discovered that the tumor had returned, leading him to undergo a second operation. By December 2024, another check-up confirmed another recurrence, prompting further medical intervention.
Chebukati was re-admitted to the hospital on February 12, 2025, and placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Tragically, he suffered a cardiac arrest on February 20, leading to his passing.
His family dismissed claims that they had been informed of his clinical death earlier. A post-mortem will be conducted ahead of his burial, scheduled for March 8, 2025, at his Kitale home.
