Kakamega Aquaculture Farmers receives Kshs 18.17 million grants to sustain their activities, enhance productivities

Kakamega Boss FCPA Fernandes Barasa and Cabinet Secretary for Mining and Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Hon.Ali Hassan Joho presided over the issuance of Sh128 million in grants to aquaculture groups from 15 counties implementing the IFAD-supported Aquaculture Business Development Programme (ABDP), where Kakamega County received a total of Sh18.17 million in cheque.

On addressing the congregation in Kakamega,Governor Barasa said the county has made significant miles in the sector such as supporting over 2,885 Level 1 beneficiaries with equipments services like predator and bird net kits, PVC liners, fingerlings, fish feeds, fisheries extension services, and training for fish farmers.

However, Barasa acknowledged that his administration has equipped and operationalized 87 smallholder groups and 90 aquaculture small enterprises like Momonyonzo dam in Likuyani, among other achievements across the county to increase fish production not only for domestic use but also for wealth creation.

On other hand, CS for Mining,Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Hassan Joho acknowledged that there is increase in fish production that has largely benefited farmers in the county adding that the next phase of ABDP will make fish farming commercially viable.

The event was graced by PS Ms. Betsy Njagi together with other officials from the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs , MCAs, executive members from the 15 beneficiary counties led by Host CECM Mophat Mandela.
