Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati has passed away at the age of 64. His son, Emmanuel, confirmed that he died at his Nairobi home on Thursday evening after spending a week in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). While he had been unwell for some time, the specifics of his illness remain undisclosed.

Chebukati, who served as IEBC Chair from 2017 until his retirement in January 2023, was widely known for his calm yet firm leadership. Colleagues and those close to him described him as a man of few words but strong convictions, rarely changing his stance once he made up his mind. His father, 90-year-old John Wafula Chebukati, recalled that his son had always been polite, resolute, and well-respected from a young age.

Born in 1961 in Bungoma County, Chebukati was the first son of John and Joina Wafula. He began his education at Matisi Primary School before attending St. Peters Mumias Boys and later transferring to Bokoli Secondary due to health issues. He later joined Lenana School, where he excelled academically before studying law at the University of Nairobi.

His mother described him as a quiet but intelligent individual who preferred deep thought over unnecessary words. As the third-born in a family of 11, he became a role model to his younger siblings, some of whom have followed in his footsteps, pursuing successful careers. Despite his demanding schedule, he always made time to visit and care for his parents, showing his deep sense of family values.

Friends and colleagues have paid tribute to Chebukati, praising his ability to handle difficult situations with wisdom and composure. Leaders from Trans Nzoia County described him as a humble yet firm leader who made a significant contribution to the country. As Kenya mourns his passing, his legacy of integrity and service remains a guiding example for future leaders.
