Garbage Wars: Arrests Made in Kenya Power Dumping Saga
Several arrests have been made over the controversial garbage dumping at Kenya Power’s Stima Plaza offices in Nairobi. Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen condemned the act, linking it to a financial standoff between Kenya Power and Nairobi County. Authorities have launched investigations, with the DCI ordered to submit a report within a week.
Several people have been arrested in connection with the controversial dumping of garbage at Kenya Power’s Stima Plaza offices in Nairobi. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed the arrests, stating that investigations are ongoing and a detailed report will be presented to Parliament. He warned that those responsible would face legal action, condemning the act as primitive and unacceptable.
The garbage standoff escalated when Nairobi County dumped waste at Kenya Power’s doorstep over a Ksh. 4.8 billion wayleave dispute, prompting the company to disconnect power to some county offices due to unpaid electricity bills totaling Ksh. 3 billion. Public Health PS Mary Muthoni visited the site, calling for an urgent cleanup to prevent a potential health crisis, citing risks of cholera and typhoid.
Murkomen’s remarks come amid a standoff between Kenya Power and county officials, with senators divided on the matter. While Kenya Power CEO Dr. Joseph Siror defended the company’s actions as lawful, the Council of Governors accused it of wielding unchecked power and selectively cutting electricity to critical county institutions, including hospitals and water services.
As tensions rise, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed the DCI to investigate the illegal dumping and submit a report within a week. Murkomen reiterated that the government must uphold the law, vowing that those behind the incident would be held accountable.
