The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has cautioned former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over remarks he made in Meru County, warning President William Ruto against visiting the region if Chief Justice Martha Koome is removed from office. The commission expressed concern that Gachagua’s statements could incite ethnic divisions.

NCIC Chairperson Dr. Samuel Kobia has formally written to Gachagua, highlighting the potential dangers of his remarks on national unity and peaceful coexistence. He noted that such utterances could undermine harmony among different ethnic groups in Kenya.

Dr. Kobia also dismissed Gachagua’s claim that President Ruto was targeting Chief Justice Koome due to her ethnicity, calling it misleading and capable of promoting negative ethnicity. He stressed that barring the president from Meru over the issue violated his constitutional role as a unifying figure.

The commission has urged Gachagua to exercise caution in his public statements, warning that reckless remarks could inflame ethnic tensions. NCIC emphasized the need for leaders to promote peace and national cohesion in their speeches.
