Police in Rongo, Migori County, have rescued 57 ailing individuals from the controversial Melkio Joseph Mission Messiah church, bringing healing activities at the facility to an abrupt halt. The dramatic operation was led by Rongo Deputy County Commissioner George Matundura on Monday night.

Matundura revealed that the raid was prompted by the deaths of two patients at the church within the past week. He said security agencies are now pursuing further legal action against the church, which remains under tight police surveillance.

Tensions had flared earlier when a family from Nyamira County stormed the church demanding the release of their relative’s body. They accused church leaders of planning a secret burial within the church compound, allegedly with the support of the deceased’s daughter.

The daughter, Jacita Achieng, who has lived at the church for over a decade, claimed her late father had expressed a wish to be buried at the church in his will, further complicating the situation.
