President William Ruto has suspended Dr. Swarup Mishra as chair of Kenya BioVax Institute over an illegal organ transplant scandal linked to Mediheal Hospital. The suspension is effective immediately, pending investigations. Health CS Aden Duale also suspended two senior officials to ensure a fair probe.

President William Ruto has suspended Dr. Swarup Mishra from his role as chair of the Kenya BioVax Institute following explosive allegations of illegal kidney transplants at Mediheal Hospital. The suspension, announced by State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed on Friday, April 18, 2025, takes effect immediately and will remain in place pending the outcome of investigations.

The Mediheal Hospital and Fertility Centre in Eldoret, founded by Mishra, is at the center of the transplant saga that has rocked the nation. Dr. Mishra, a former Kesses MP who was appointed to BioVax in November 2024, is now expected to step aside to allow a thorough and impartial probe into the matter.

In his statement, President Ruto reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to fighting corruption and upholding integrity in public service, particularly in the healthcare sector. He emphasized that justice for victims of unethical medical practices must be delivered without delay.

The shake-up comes just hours after Health CS Aden Duale suspended two senior officials from the Kenya Blood Transfusion and Transplant Services to safeguard the integrity of the investigation. Dr. Maurice Wakwabubi and Dr. Everlyne Chege were both sent home to pave the way for independent inquiries into the scandal.
