Wanga Flags Gachagua’s GEMA Remarks as a Threat to National Unity
Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) National Chairperson Gladys Wanga has voiced her concerns over former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's recent statements suggesting that the Gikuyu, Embu, Meru, and Akamba (GEMA) communities will determine the next government, regardless of ODM leader Raila Odinga’s stance.
Speaking on Sunday, February 2, Gachagua asserted that GEMA communities would play a decisive role in shaping the next administration. In response, Wanga questioned whether such remarks align with ODM’s national outlook, emphasizing that the party represents all regions.
"There are red flags when someone claims a particular region will dominate, especially in Nairobi. That should be concerning because ODM is a national party. When I hear such statements, I take notice and raise concerns," she said in an interview with NTV on Monday.
Addressing ODM’s political direction, the Homa Bay governor reiterated that Raila Odinga is actively engaging supporters across the country to determine the party’s next move. She clarified that ODM has no formal agreement with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration, noting that the existing arrangement only involves former ODM officials holding executive positions.
"So far, there is no formal document outlining a partnership between ODM and Kenya Kwanza. That’s why our party leader began consultations immediately after returning," Wanga explained. "He will decide on the next steps, and we are waiting for his guidance in the coming weeks."
She also dismissed speculation that the opposition had been weakened by a potential alliance between Raila and Ruto, stressing that ODM remains committed to holding the government accountable.
"The Minoritys role is to keep the government in check—that’s how our constitution is designed. ODM lawmakers will continue playing that role," she affirmed.
Wanga’s remarks come amid heightened political maneuvering and negotiations as key players strategize for the 2027 elections.
